2 Of The Cheapest Ways To Revamp A Tired Kitchen Splashback.

Is your kitchen splashback looking tired?  Are you looking for kitchen splashback ideas?

Maybe looking for quick, cheap and easy ways to revamp those old tiles?

If you’re looking for ideas or just wanting to update your tired old splashback but wanting to do it as cheaply as possible then this blog is for you. Country or City renovating it doesn’t matter these ideas can work wherever you live.

My husband and I are often on the look out for a good “cosmetic renovator” but what usually comes with that is a tired kitchen.

As you can see this kitchen really needs a cosmetic makeover and a good kitchen splashback idea. A cosmetic renovation focuses on making the property more visually appealing.  It does not include changing the floor plan or knocking out walls and doesn’t require permits or council plans.  It’s like a face lift for the home.

I love cosmetic renovations as you use old existing bones and transform them into something more modern and current. The fun part –CREATIVITY, and a lot can be used.  These renovations can (but not always) be cheaper than a structural renovation.

The following two ideas take little time and will almost instantly change an outdated kitchen splashback.

Over the years and while waiting for renovations to occur or even in the interim while I save for the dream kitchen yet I can’t stand the kitchen I’m living with, I have used these ideas time and time again

If you’re struggling with what to do have a look at these ideas. They’re easy to do and don’t require a lot time and you don’t need to be a qualified tradie.  How exciting!

Take a look at these kitchen splashback ideas.

1.PAINT IT

This may seem daunting and even some of my friends have looked at me like I was mad when I say to them ‘paint it’.  Paint is my best friend, I paint everything! Once I see anything looking tired I paint it and a kitchen splash back is NO exception.

Ten years ago was the first time I painted a kitchen splashback. The products and colour options available were very limited.  Certainly not inspiring. Nerves got the better of me. I actually thought I should just forget the whole thing and get the professionals in.

Just remember the first time can be nerve wracking but it’s more about the fear of the unknown.

The old kitchen was actually designed well with quality fittings and cabinetry but as you can see from the pic it was very outdated. Luckily the tiles were in relatively good condition which is essential when painting.

After weighing up the options and as a renovator looking to profit, the cheapest and best option was to paint. If you want to know more about how to renovate for profit please read my post – Renovating for Profit- Follow these 8 rules for success.

A new kitchen was going to cost thousands of dollars compared to some paint and tools – a few hundred if that. I googled every product available on the market and read every ‘how to use’ instruction. Mistakes were a no go.

I came home with the only white colour you could buy at the time and followed the instructions to the letter. Worried the paint would peel off and turn from a little cosmetic job into a complicated big one.  Ouch!

I shouldn’t have worried. The result was amazing. Looks brand new.

Voila!

Painting does take longer than the second idea below however it only took a few hours all up.  I also painted the rest of the kitchen and that certainly took longer however this is about the kitchen splashback.

There are many new products on the market and Dulux have a fantastic renovators range that is well worth using and comes with a great colour selection.  If you’re still nervous take a look at the Dulux link below.

One thing I would advise is to follow the instructions.  Don’t skimp – all products work together to create a near perfect finish. It really can look amazing.

2. KITCHEN SPLASHBACK DECALS.

Now before you say ‘NO WAY’- have a look.  The kitchen in the pic is a bit tired and old fashion. Functional yes. Some of you may say it’s pretty good.  What am I whinging about? And you might be right.

My husband the builder was not interested in the kitchen either mostly because the work was purely cosmetic and could wait while other more pressing parts of our renovation get done. I had to come up with something I could live with while I wait (and continue to wait) for the dream kitchen.

I love colour. This kitchen was too bland for me.

As you can see not too bad but not too dreamy either.  It needed a cosmetic makeover that’s all.

I decided I would try kitchen decals. I had seen them on Etsy and decided to use the brand Bleucoin. They have so many options – all different tastes and styles.  I picked these ones such vibrant colour.

The old tiles were in good enough condition and were flat with no texture.  Don’t worry I did think I may be wasting my time and money however I felt that the loss (if there was one) was worth a try.

I thought they may look cheap and wondered how they could possibly last the distance with heat, grease splatter and regular cleaning.

They arrived and I was peasanty surprised at the quality.  So easy to install and took all of an hr to put on. My husband even helped as he could see the almost instant change in the overall look. It was very easy and simple to do.

Totally Different!

Seven years later I haven’t changed them.

When people come over they think they’re real tiles. I tell them eventually 😊

The decals have stayed pretty well put, sometimes one of the corners curls up but with a few spares I’ve only had to change three. They are cleaned regularly with ajax spray and wipe and sit directly behind an oven cook top and a kettle.

Country Kitchen

There has never been a fire safety issue. After having them for 7 years I’m thinking it will soon be time for a change. Perhaps a more modern look like the pic below.  It’s so easy and cheap to do I may never go back to permanent tiles. Variety is the spice of life.
